This is simplified & intended to help explain color to a child.

Sir Issac Newton is credited with developing the first circular diagram of colors in 1666. This color wheel has been used since then as a tool for understanding & creating harmonious color schemes.
Basic color wheel:
Primary colors cannot be mixed by any combination of other colors. and all other colors are derived from these three colors.
Mixing:
RED with BLUE makes PURPLE
YELLOW with RED makes ORANGE
Blue with YELLOW makes GREEN
